🏛 Temple History

According to the traditional Sthala Purana, Brahma once incurred the displeasure of Lord Shiva and was reduced to ashes. Brahma subsequently received Shiva's grace and was restored, along with the divine knowledge and authority necessary to continue the work of creation. Because of this association, the shrine came to be known as Kadavur Mayanam. The sacred site is also associated with Sage Markandeya and the nearby Thirukadaiyur Amritaghateswarar Temple. The present name Thirumayanam is connected with the traditional spiritual significance of the site.
