๐Ÿ”ฑ Temple Significance

Thalachangadu Sangaranyeswarar Temple is an ancient Shiva temple in Mayiladuthurai district and one of the important Tevaram Paadal Petra Sthalams. The presiding deity is Sangaranyeswarar, also known as Sangavaneswarar and Sangarunadeswarar. The Goddess is Soundaranayaki. The temple is traditionally associated with Vishnu worshipping Shiva and receiving the divine Panchajanya conch.

๐Ÿ› Temple History

The temple is traditionally regarded as a Mada Koil associated with Ko Chengannan Chola. Because Tirugnana Sambandar sang the Tevaram hymns on this shrine, the sacred site is considered to have existed from an early period. The present stone structure is associated with later Chola developments, with further additions attributed to subsequent periods. The temple has several Chola inscriptions, including records associated with Uttama Chola and Sembiyan Mahadevi. The temple's sacred name is connected with Sanguvanam/Sankaranyam, and the conch-related tradition is an important part of its religious identity. The temple also has a traditional association with Sirappuli Nayanar, who is said to have been born at this sacred place.
