Valampuranathar Temple at Thiruvalampuram is an important Shaiva pilgrimage centre and one of the Devaram Paadal Petra Sthalams. The presiding deity is Lord Valampuranathar and the goddess is Vaduvakirkanni Amman. The temple is traditionally associated with the worship of Appar, Sambandar and Sundarar.

The temple is traditionally regarded as one of the Maadakkoil temples associated with Kochengat Chola. The temple has an east-facing structure, and the self-manifested Shiva Lingam has distinctive depressions on its upper portion. The name Melaperumpallam is associated with these depressions. The temple also has legends connected with Eranda Muni and Pattinathar.
