🔱 Temple Significance

Sayavaneswarar Temple is an ancient Shiva temple at Sayavanam, near Poompuhar. The presiding deity is Sayavaneswarar, also known as Indreswarar, and the Goddess is Kuyilinun Nanmozhi Ammai. The temple is associated with the Tevaram hymns of Tirugnana Sambandar and Appar. Sayavanam is traditionally regarded as one of the six sacred Shiva centres on the banks of the Cauvery considered comparable to Kasi.

🏛 Temple History

The sacred place was historically known as Thiruchaykkadu and is associated with the medieval Chola period. Traditional accounts attribute the temple to Ko Chengannan Chola, who is associated with the construction of several Mada Koils. The name Thiruchaykkadu is traditionally connected with sai, referring to the korai grass that was believed to have grown abundantly in the area. According to the temple tradition, Aditi, the mother of Indra, wished to worship Shiva at this sacred place. When Indra learned of her devotion, he attempted to take the temple to Devaloka using his elephant Airavata so that his mother could worship there every day. When the temple was being pulled, Goddess Parvati is said to have called out with a voice sweet like a cuckoo. Shiva then appeared and instructed Indra to worship Him at the sacred site itself rather than taking the temple away. This tradition is associated with the Goddess's name Kuyilinun Nanmozhi Ammai. The temple is also traditionally regarded as the birthplace and liberation site of Iyarpagai Nayanar, one of the revered Nayanmars.
