Thirukadaiyur Amritaghateswarar–Abirami Temple is a famous ancient Shiva temple dedicated to Lord Amritaghateswarar and Goddess Abirami. The temple is a Paadal Petra Sthalam and is especially associated with the legend of Markandeya, whom Lord Shiva protected from Yama in the form of Kalasamhara Murthy. 🏛 Temple History

The temple has a long history associated with the Chola period and later rulers. According to the traditional legend, Markandeya was destined to die at the age of sixteen. As a devoted worshipper of Shiva, he embraced the Shiva Lingam when Yama came to take his life. Lord Shiva emerged as Kalasamhara Murthy, defeated Yama and blessed Markandeya with eternal youth. The temple also became famous through the devotional tradition of Abirami Pattar, who composed the Abirami Anthathi in praise of Goddess Abirami.
