๐Ÿ”ฑ Temple Significance

This is the 158th Thevara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and the 41st Shiva Sthalam on the southern bank of the Kaveri in Chola Nadu. It is the 4th of the eight Atta Veeratta Sthalams, associated with Lord Shiva's destruction of Daksha's yajna through Veerabhadra. Thirugnana Sambandar and Vallalar have sung in praise of the Lord here.

๐Ÿ› Temple History

The temple is traditionally believed to have existed before the 7th century because Thirugnana Sambandar sang hymns here. It was later reconstructed as a stone temple during the Chola period. A Sundara Pandyan-period inscription records the ancient name of the place as Pariyalur and the deity as Thiruveerattanamudayar and Dakshesamudayar. Later inscriptions from the Krishna Devaraya period also record grants for the temple. The temple was renovated and consecrated in 2011.
