Aakkur Thanthondreeswarar Temple is an ancient Shiva temple and a Tevaram Paadal Petra Sthalam in Aakkur, Mayiladuthurai district. The presiding deity is Thanthondreeswarar / Thanthondriyappar, a self-manifested (Swayambhu) form of Lord Shiva. The Goddess is Valnedunkanni. The temple is traditionally associated with Sirappuli Nayanar, one of the 63 Nayanmars.

🏛 Temple History

The temple is traditionally attributed to Kochengat Chola and is regarded as one of the elevated Maada Koils associated with him. The temple is praised in the Tevaram hymns of Tirugnana Sambandar and Appar and is counted among the Paadal Petra Sthalams of the Cauvery southern bank. The principal legend is connected with Sirappuli Nayanar. He was known for serving Shiva devotees and providing them with food. On one occasion, he wished to feed 1,000 devotees. Although 999 devotees had arrived, one person was still missing. According to the sthala tradition, Lord Shiva himself appeared as an elderly devotee and completed the gathering of 1,000. Because Shiva was believed to have appeared as one among the thousand, he is also associated with the name Aayirathil Oruvar ("One among the Thousand").
