🔱 Temple Significance

Thirumahendrapalli Thirumeniyazhar Temple is an ancient Shiva temple situated on the southern bank of the Kollidam River. Lord Shiva is worshipped as Thirumeniyazhar, also known as Somasundarar, and Goddess is Vadivambikai. The temple is one of the Paadal Petra Sthalams and is traditionally associated with the worship of Indra, Mahendra and Chandra.

🏛 Temple History

The ancient name of the place is Thirumayendrapalli, while it is now commonly known as Mahendrapalli. According to temple tradition, Indra worshipped Lord Shiva here, and the place came to be associated with the name Mahendrapalli. Tirugnanasambandar praised the deity in the Tevaram hymns. The temple has an east-facing entrance with a small three-tiered rajagopuram. The complex contains shrines for Vinayaka, Kashi Vishwanatha, Vishnu with Sri Devi and Bhu Devi, Bhairava, Surya and Chandra. The temple is traditionally described as about 1,300 years old, with its history associated with Pallava, Chola and Pandya periods.
