๐Ÿ”ฑ Temple Significance

Korukkai Veeratteswarar Temple is the 80th Thevara Paadal Petra Sthalam and the 26th Shiva temple on the northern bank of the River Kaveri in Chola Nadu. It is one of the Atta Veeratta Sthalams, where Lord Shiva is believed to have burnt Manmatha (Kama) with the fire from His third eye. The temple is also associated with the worship and hymns of Appar and later saints.

๐Ÿ› Temple History

The temple is believed to have existed before the 7th century, as Appar praised the deity in his hymns. The structure was later rebuilt in stone during the Chola period and expanded during the Vijayanagara and Nayaka periods. Inscriptions from the reigns of Rajaraja Chola III, Rajadhiraja II and Kulothunga Chola III record donations of land, money and lamps to the temple.
