🔱 Temple Significance

Pereyil Jagadeeswarar Temple is a traditional Shiva shrine situated in the Tiruvarur region of the Cauvery delta, an area well known for its rich Shaiva heritage.

Lord Shiva is worshipped here as Jagadeeswarar, while the Goddess is worshipped as Vanavan Madhaviyammai. The temple represents the long-standing tradition of Shiva worship that developed throughout the Chola country.

The temple is particularly of interest to pilgrims travelling through the numerous historic Shiva temples around Tiruvarur, Kumbakonam and Mannargudi. Devotees visit the shrine for regular Shiva worship and important observances such as Pradosham and Maha Shivaratri.

🏛 Temple History

Pereyil forms part of the ancient temple landscape of the Chola country. The surrounding Tiruvarur region developed as one of the important centres of Tamil Shaivism, resulting in numerous Shiva temples being established and maintained across the Cauvery delta.

The temple's traditional history is connected with the worship of Jagadeeswarar and the local sacred traditions of Pereyil. Like many temples in the region, its present structure reflects the architectural and religious development of the historic Tamil temple tradition.

The temple continues to serve the local community as a place of worship and forms part of the wider network of historic temples in Tiruvarur district.
